In 2010, Lord & Taylor opened its first two Outlet Stores in New Jersey and Michigan. And, our iconic flagship store on Fifth Avenue underwent the Ultimate Face-lift and now features a state-of-the-art beauty floor, an all-new home department and a newly designed men’s floor.
Lord & Taylor has always been a trendsetter – and not just for fashion. Since opening in 1826, we've also set major trends in the retailing business. Our history is filled with firsts. We were the first retailer with the vision to move to Fifth Avenue. The first to install an elevator. The first to have a woman as president. And there’s more. Here’s a quick timeline…
A Little bit of History about Lord and Taylor...
1826: Samuel Lord and George Washington Taylor open the first Lord & Taylor store at 47 Catherine Street.
1853: Lord & Taylor opens a new store at 255-261 Grand Street. It is the first store in New York City to use a large glass-domed central rotunda to light its interior.
1860: Lord & Taylor opens a new store on the corner of Broadway and Grand Street. It is one of the first stores in New York City to have a working passenger elevator.
1863: Armed employees, barricaded with cases of merchandise successfully defend the Grand Street store from looting mobs during the Civil War draft riots.
1872: Lord & Taylor opens a new store on the corner of Broadway & 20th Street becoming the first building in New York with an iron frame. The store's elaborate steam elevator becomes a tourist destination, attracting thousands of visitors each day. Lord and Taylor Full Story Here...
