Hannaford, Your Local Grocer Since 1883
The Hannaford brothers began selling produce in Portland, Maine, in 1883, but it took a lot more than fresh tomatoes and apples to grow their business. The brothers looked at their customers and understood what they cared about most – family, community, quality, value – and built the business accordingly, with core values that still show us the way. Today, we live those values in more than 180 stores and with 26,000 associates, our roots still firmly planted in the Northeast.
We love local, and we know you do, too. Our local farmers and producers make life better for our communities and help preserve thousands of acres of farmland. Hannaford is committed to carrying local products made or grown in the states we do business in, and we're bringing in more local products every year. Your neighborhood Hannaford carries local items from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and New York, and we encourage you to talk to the store manager about any favorite local products you'd like to see on the shelf at your store.
Greater than Groceries
What's important to you is important to us. From carrying 100% sustainable seafood and achieving zero waste goals in our stores, to fighting hunger in our communities and supporting local farms, we share your passion and commitment to making the world a better place. Together, we're Greater than Groceries.
We work hard every day to make certain that what you find in our stores – from the foods we carry to the services we offer – demonstrates our connection with local farmers, suppliers and manufacturers, and our stewardship for our planet's natural resources.
Zero Food Waste to Landfills Achieved!
We've reached our goal of sending no food waste to landfills. That amounted to 65 million pounds in 2020! Of that, more than 25 million pounds of nutritious and completely safe to eat food – like fruit and veggies, pasta and eggs – went to local hunger relief organizations. To achieve our goal, all Hannaford stores first focused on preventing food waste, then prioritized reuse and recycling methods.
You depend on us to provide high-quality, safe and nutritious foods and we take that responsibility very seriously.
We're concerned about every aspect of the foods we sell, from where our products come from, to how they're handled in our distribution centers, trucks and stores.
We know it's important to earn the trust you place in us every day. We have a staff of more than 50 associates who serve as our food safety and quality assurance experts spanning many backgrounds and disciplines, including food safety, food science, quality assurance, nutritional, pharmaceutical, military, regulatory and other related fields. Together, they ensure that our foods are handled according to strict guidelines so that they are always fresh, safe and nutritious.
