Crate & Barrel
Furniture | Outdoor Living | Dining & Entertaining | Kitchen & Food | Decoration & Accessories | Bed & Bath
Founded by Gordon and Carole Segal in 1962, Crate and Barrel was born after a European honeymoon sparked the idea to bring simple, beautiful and practical housewares to the US market. Their passion resulted in our first storefront, which used crates and barrels as display fixtures in an old elevator factory on Chicago’s Wells Street. Today, we greet over 22 million customers in our stores each year and welcome more than 100 million visitors online.
Our Stores
Crate and Barrel has 89 stores and 8 outlets across the U.S. and Canada with 15 international franchise locations that showcase our celebrated housewares and extensive furniture collections. As a pioneer in experiential retail with vignettes for every room in the home, our in-store events span wedding registry and charity events to design and entertainment trends. We are a gifting destination and passionate about customer service, a combination that has brought more than 2 million couples to Crate and Barrel for wedding registry alone.
In 2001, Crate and Barrel acquired The Land of Nod, a brand offering kids furniture and toys. In 2018, they became Crate&kids, the newest (and tiniest) member of Crate and Barrel, providing customers the opportunity to shop with us for even more of the moments that matter in their lives.
We curate inspiration for the home, connecting the creative work of artisans and designers to people and places around the world.
Our lifestyle brands offer inspired living through high-quality products, exclusive designs, and timeless style - all powered by digital design and visualization tools that provide seamless shopping solutions in-store and online.
With a distinct architectural aesthetic, experiential store environment, and online community, we engage with our customers through social media, mobile shopping, design services, gift registry, and more.

Our Commitment
Responsible Packaging
Certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and printed with water-based inks, our shopping bags and iconic black and white boxes are made with renewable fiber that contains post-consumer recyclable material. We also use 100 percent recyclable tissue and sustainable Air Pads, GreenWrap and Microfoam. Source-reduced and photo-degradable, our packaging requires less material and space–reducing waste, fuel, and delivery costs every day.
Sustainable Forestry
Timber is one of our key raw materials and serves as a foundation to build sustainable practices that help conserve, protect and restore forests. Brands work closely with the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) and follow new legal requirements under the Lacey Act for all import suppliers of wood and plant based product.
100% LED
The energy efficient bulbs light our stores, displays and are packaged with eligible lighting purchases –increasing our store’s energy efficiency by at least 66 percent. For customers, we also offer Tala LED. Our Tala LED bulb sales support Tala’s Ten Trees program.
LEED Gold Certification
We have distribution center facilities throughout the United States and Canada. Our facility in Tracy, California was the largest distribution center to become LEED GOLD certified in the United States.
